Tomorrow, 3 November 2020, Doctors Express Urgent Care Ltd. and the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control (CBC) go to Grand Court to battle over the September 2019 raid and seizure of legal medical-grade cannabis oils and vapes. The proceedings will take place in an open court.
On 18 September 2019, CBC officers raided the Doctors Express facility in George Town, seizing lawful pharmaceutical-grade cannabis vaping products from the shelves of their medical offices. These products were available to patients only by prescription by registered physicians, as legislation dictates. The raid took place as a result of a memo issued by the office of Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lee two days prior; in this memo, Dr. Lee expressed his opposition to the use of vaporisable cannabinoids.
After nearly a year in CBC custody, the medicine was returned to Doctors Express in August 2020. At this time, Doctors Express began prescribing and selling the cannabis vaping products once again, having filed a lawsuit against the CBC.
In the Cayman Islands, cannabis extracts and tinctures are legal when prescribed by a medical doctor. Recreational use of cannabis remains unlawful as a Schedule I drug in the Cayman Islands.
